PRESS RELEASE
New Delhi, the 10th February, 2014
In yet another shocking incident adding to the rising attacks on the North-East community, a minor girl from Manipur was raped on the night of Friday, 7th February, 2014 in Munirka, New Delhi.
The Siamsinpawlpi (Paite Students’ Welfare Association) and Young Paite Association (YPA), Joint Headquarters, Delhi hereby express their strongest condemnation of this abominable act and brutality inflicted on Miss Naunu (name changed) 14 years. We wish to convey to all that the rape of an innocent girl, that too a minor, is a most deplorable crime and the culprit(s) deserve no sympathy whatsoever.
We express our heart-felt gratitude to all supporters who took up the cause of justice with us wholeheartedly. Special mention must be made of the role of students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and other student organizations from Northeast communities who have been at the forefront of the movement since the morning of 8th February, 2014 at Vasant Vihar Police Station and elsewhere. We humbly acknowledge their support and cooperation in our fight for justice for the victim. In addition, we earnestly request them for their continued support so that the case is brought to its logical end. We also note with much appreciation the support of other humanitarian groups and social activists in their efforts to bring relief to the victim.
An update on the case:
• An FIR has now been registered in the case as FIR No.98/14 under Section 363, 366A, 376(2)(i), 342, 509 and 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC); Section 3 of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989 and Section 4 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 and the accused/culprit is reported to be in police custody.
• The statement of the victim has been taken and the accused produced before the Magistrate on 9th February, 2014.
• A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Delhi Police headed by Shri B.S. Jaiswal, DCP (South) has been constituted for speedy investigation of the case.
We have full faith in the Hon’ble Court and the SIT to bring the case to its fair completion and that the culprit is booked as per the laws of the land. We also urge the Government to compensate and rehabilitate the victim by extending medical treatment, financial support, legal aid, psycho-trauma counseling and rehabilitation for her holistic healing. We believe that speedy justice in the case will go a long way towards assuaging the sentiments of the Northeast people - who are made to feel alienated and unsafe time and again. This will also act as a strong deterrent for such atrocities which occur against the Northeast people unfortunately in their own country.
