Sibal exhorts NERIST graduates to be agents of change

Governor pleads for grant and aid

ITANAGAR, Oct 12: The 3rd Convocation of North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) was held at NERIST Campus, Nirjuli today.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal congratulated the graduates and expressed his confidence that they will play their roles and contribute in making the world a better place. He said that his expectations from the graduates are of a very high order, not only as professionals but also as intelligent and wish that they will now serve.

Exhorting them to be agents of change, the minister advised them not to let the fire in the belly subside. Passion, he said, makes difference between an average and an outstanding performer. He advised them to remember that the degrees will help them to make a living but it is their education that will help them to find a life. And, both will help them to make a difference in the lives of others.

The Union Minister was pleased to note the large percentage of girls amongst the toppers. He said that large numbers of girls graduating in mechanical and civil engineering shows that mindset of the people has changed and it is a matter of great pride.

Assuring whatever possible help to NERIST, the HRD Minister appreciated the institute for its dovetailing academic programmes.

In his convocation address, Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, General (Retd) JJ Singh, who is the President of NERIST Society, advised those who have received their degrees to remember that individual success, however desirable and coveted, is not enough by itself. They have to be socially useful, innovative and have multi-disciplinary approach to make themselves, their families and State and Country proud. He exhorted the recipients to be the source of motivation and inspiration for their peers and juniors, their community and society.

The NERIST Society President informed that after attaining the status of a ‘deemed to be university’ in 2005, NERIST has added another feather on its cap by introducing master’s programme in all branches of engineering and technology. It is the first institute in the State of Arunachal Pradesh to start a full time master’s programme in Management and doctoral programmes in Engineering, Technology, Basic Sciences, Applied Science, Humanities, Social Sciences and Management respectively. He added that NERIST is committed to comply with the requirements and continually improve the effectiveness of the quality management systems.  It is also committed for the personality development of the students for their successful and bright future.

The Governor, who has been attending every annual meetings and activities of the premiere technical institute in the last five years, said that there have been considerable gaps in the resources required for desired infrastructure creation and those available. He urged upon the Union Minister of Human Resource Development to provide the necessary impetus required in term of grants and aids to the institute. He expressed his hope that after the visit by the Union HRD Minister, the Ministry will ensure that all the requirements of the Institute under 12th Five Year plan are met.

Madan Prasad Bezbaruah, Chairman, Board of Management, NERIST, in his address said that every person must be alive to the winds of blowing across. They should open up their minds to imbibe the best that the world has to offer, keeping no doubt that pride in their local distinctiveness. If they do not, time and development will pass by them. The NERIST Board of Management, chairman, while stating that as time passes, along with achievements come the problems of ageing of infrastructure. He emphasized that NERIST needs special attention so that the much needed academic excellence and research are not compromised by poor and outdated facilities.

Earlier, NERIST Director Prof. Dipankar Pal highlighted on the academic and research activities of the institute. The Institute has started three new M. Tech programmes in VLSI, Computer Science & Engineering and in Thermo Fluid Engineering from academic year of 2012-13. The Director added that the Institute has recently gone into collaboration with the American University of Sharjah, UAE, on research, project-supervision, research-supervision, faculty and student exchange and issues of bilateral interest. This is for the first time that NERIST has been in collaboration with a foreign university of repute.

Stating few of major achievements of the institute, the NERIST Director informed that Dr. L. B. Singha, from Department of Forestry received DBT Overseas Fellowship to work at the International Laboratory in the Dept. of Biology of Concordia University, Canada, while Dr. Aditi Bhardra from Dept. of Agriculture Engineering has received Indo-US Research Fellowship to do post-doctoral research in US. Dr. K. S. Devangan has gone to Canada for post-doctoral research and Dr. H. S. Yadav has been selected to do post-doctoral research in Hungary by INSA under its exchange programme. He added that he himself was invited as a part of the Indian delegation to visit the Qingdao Ocean University, China for the 3rd orientation programme under bilateral exchange with RGIIM Shillong.

Gold Medal recipients of 2011 are Kenli Bagra, Sudipta Majumder, Subhasish Das, Junmoni Barman, Dakjum Eshi, Jini Natung, Pinom Ering, Pankaj Kumar Jha, Projjolita Mahanta, Ramandeep Singh, Jonaki Biswas, Rina Moirangthem, Swagata Das, Sumit Saurabh, Kuntal Purkayastha, Niti Taki, Minotshing Maza, Nitesh Kumar Jha, Paramjit Saha, Sauradeep Dey, Dhiraj Raj Timsina, Amit Kumar Singh, Keisham Padameshore Singh, Sukhen Kumar Chakraborty, Sourabh Saha, Shashadhar Das and Anubhab Pal.

Gold Medal recipients of 2012 are Hage Anka, Sai Prasad Ojha, Evanylla Iangap Mawrie, Rajiv Khatioda, Nilakshi Boruah, Pooja Mishra, Jaba Debberma, Abhinay Kumar, Ankita Raj, Rahul Kumar Singh, Aditya B Chandran, Abhishek Mungoli, Nunleppam Monica, Nabajit Sarkarl, Indrajit Paul, Darshan Prakash Borthakur, Sapna S Mishra, Ashish Choudhury, Yarmala Koteswara Rao, Ayarma Chourasia, Anwesha Bhattacharjee, Sagarika Paul, Kaumudi Singh and Payal Jain.

Apart from this, the award of degree was also given to PhD degree holder Karam Ratan Singh and Utpla Kumar Saha in mathematics, Purabi Saikia in Forestry, Lakhi Nath Bora in Physics, Swapnali Baruah in Humanities, Jimmy Yebjeny in Forestry and Sanjib Chowdhury in Mathematics. Further, M. Tech, M. Sc, MBA, B.Tech, and B.Sc degrees were also awarded to candidates on the occasion.

The convocation programme was attended by members of the management NERIST, senior officers, eminent academicians, intellectuals and the faculties and other members of the NERIST family including alumni and students of NERIST. (Pro to Governor)
