Appeal to Stop Oil Exploration and Drilling in Manipur
Dear Friends,
I am pleased to send in an urgent appeal on behalf of the Committee on the Protection of Natural Resources in Manipur against Oil Exploration and Drilling in Manipur. Indigenous communities and their organizations from Churachandpur, Jiribam and Tamenglong has been protesting against oil exploration and drilling in Manipur by the Jubiliant Oil and Gas Private Limited, based in Netherlands. Community organizations had already resolved against Oil Exploration in Manipur in several meetings, including the State Level Convention on Oil Exploration on 16 July 2012. However, the Government, in clear disregard of the community voices has been supporting the Jubiliant Energy. Several protest has been organized against oil exploration moves in Manipur, including the ongoing environmental public hearings organized by the Manipur Pollution Control Board, which has already been rejected due to its limited scope and its flawed process, weak mechanisms and previous anti people outcomes in previous hearings on proposed Tipaimukh dam. I am pleased to attach the Urgent Appeal, Community resolutions against oil exploration, media reflections and some pictures of protest against oil exploration.
