Kuki Students debate on Social Leadership and Racism in Delhi

The Kuki Students Organisation Delhi (KSOD) has organized a one day educational programme ‘Jillai Evening’ in SSS-I Auditorium, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi on April 3, 2014. The event was organized by the Education Department of Kuki Students Organisation, Delhi.
The theme focused on the good and bad side of social leadership and also addressed the issues on racism which have become relevant in the national capital today.
The session was inaugurated by Pastor Letlal Haokip of Kuki Worship Service, Delhi after which a thought provoking debate competition kicked off at 11 am. It was chaired by Mr Sasang Kipgen of which was moderated by Mr Timothy Chongthu and Mr Samuel Misao. Selected students were divided into two groups viz Movers and Opposers. Participations were mainly from the students who were studying in Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University and other premier universities.
Addressing the gathering, President of KSOD Mr Thangminlen Kipgen warmly welcomed each and every one who attended the programme. “It is a big day for all us, which give us an opportunity to share our opinions”, he said.
Mr Samuel Misao, Assistant Secretary, Education Department, KSOD highlighted the need of the programme.
Kuki students living in the national capital turned up in the event and shared their thoughts and ideas. During the debate competition, many of the speakers/participants emphasized the importance of having social leaders in Delhi. They said leaders are the only one who helps the society at large. Without their presence, no society can survive in the metropolitan cities.
Kuki Worship Service (KWS) Delhi pastor Rev Letlal blessed the programme, and then the programme begins as scheduled. Mr. S Henlianlal Gangte and Miss Thethem Khongsai won the first and second position in the debate competition respectively.
The second session began from 2pm to 5pm. It was a Public Lecture in which various Kuki students expressed their thoughts and opinions on the topic “Understanding Racism: Are We Racist?” The topic was deliberately discussed and many of the speakers expressed their views on how racism developed among the mainland cities.
“Racism is inherited by an individual since birth, says, one of the speakers. However, if a person suppressed another with pride it is totally wrong. Therefore, we should not practice racism against others,” said the other. Media incharge of Northeast Helpline, Mr Bruce K Thangkhal and leaders from different sister organisations were also present in the event.
At the end of the programme, the opinion of the house was sought. Participants has given their choice. Almost 100 percent of the members present raised their hands in support of favouring “social leadership is important”.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Miss Joycee Suantak, Secretary, Education Department, KSO Delhi.
