THE PRIDE OF INDIA
“The Zomi Youth Association, Delhi Region and Zomi Students’ Federation, Delhi organised a reception of Olympic Bronze medalist in Women’s Boxing, MC Mary Kom on early Tuesday morning, 14th August at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi”.
NEW DELHI, Aug 14: HEY, Wake Up! “WHY?” Mary Kom will arrive at IGI Airport this morning”. All the Zomis are rushing towards the airport to have a reception of our sister Mary, was the first word of the day. Soon after Mary Kom arrived, the strong crowd -- the Zomis from all over India enchanted “Mary, Mary, Mary…” with their placards, which reads, “Mary Kom, the Pride of India”, “Mary Kom, the Queen of Indian Women Boxing”, “Zomis’ Greatest Boxer Ever Born”, “Mary Kom, the Jewel of Manipur”, “ We, the Zomis are really Proud of You”, “ Long Live Mary Kom”, “We loves You”, “The Zomis Love Mary Kom”, etc. The Indira Gandhi International Airport on early Tuesday (Aug 13) morning was heavily thundered and echoed with the voices of the Zomis, who are waiting for their sister, Mary Kom, the only Indian women boxer who clinched Bronze Medal in the just concluded London Olympics. The reception program was organised by the Zomi Youth Association, Delhi Region and Zomi Students’ Federation, Delhi. The Kuki Students’ Orgnisation, Delhi also attended the reception in large number. Four buses were hired by the organiser for public transportation.
Mary Kom was guarded and tightly protected by women police amidst the crowd and the media persons in the airport. The crowd followed her to have a glimpse of her, some tried their best to garland her with flowers and traditional shawls, there’s many who wish to shake hands with her. But all these wishes did not happen to all, but to only few. Mary Kom was like a magnet of crowd and cameras!
After a long struggled, this writer managed to catch-up our sister just a second! Mary Kom told the media, “In the Semi-Final bout, she was too much pressurized by the home crowd who supported their hero Nicola Adams. Maybe, because of this, I don’t know what happened to me, I can’t fight properly. I was confused. Now I didn’t decided to hang up my gloves, if my health is good, I would like to fight for Gold medal in the next Olympic in Rio, 2016”.
“To see Mary Kom, I woke up at 4am this morning. Now I’m really happy, I clearly saw her face, her twin sons, her husband, her mom and her dad,” says Niangboi, a student from Delhi University.
Lian Zomi, who works in a night-shift Call Centre, said, “I came straight from my office, I haven’t sleep yet, I don’t mind. So I am here to see our sister Mary Kom, who brought laurels for our country as well as our state. I am really proud of her, she’s from our district, Churachandpur. I also appreciated our Zomi leaders [Zomi Youth Association & Zomi Students’ Federation, Delhi] for organising this reception, which is the first time in India’s capital. This is the biggest chance to see our sister. Seeing Mary Kom, is a sign of good luck to me.”
“Long Live, Mary Kom, The Pride of India!” enthralled the Zomis. The “Lady of the Ring” Mary Kom was felicitated by the Zomis under the aegis of the Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) at New Lamka YPA Hall, Churachandpur in 2008 after returning from her fourth successive gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in China.
The organising leaders like Pu Vumsuan (President, ZYA, Delhi Region), Pu S. Khupminthang, Pu Lun Khuptong, Pu Biaklun Shoute, Pu Nang Lian Kham and others were praiseworthy. These leaders also could not have chance talk to Mary Kom, but luckily for a few second they could. The crowd was too strong! This shows the Zomis really appreciated and acknowledged our Zomi sister, Mary Kom.
“Though Mary Kom brought Bronze medal, yet, it’s more than Gold medal for a 29-year-old, a mother of two, who have shifted her weight to fight in Olympic Games. Mary Kom does great things for our country. The central government as well as state government must recognized her contribution and they must give her a big award in cash or kind,” said Nang Lian Kham, Joint Secretary, Zomi Youth Association, Delhi Region.
Zomi Youth Association, Delhi Region and Zomi Students’ Federation, Delhi presented Zomi traditional shawl called ‘Zomi Puan’ and a Memento to Pi MC Mary Kom as a token love and appreciation.
According to ZYA, Delhi Region president Pu Vumsuan, “The Zomis would submit a memorandum seeking benefits for our sister Mary Kom. We would request the central government to award a cash prize of Rs 50 lakhs to Mary Kom to show their (central govt) acknowledgment of sportsperson from the North East states. We are asking this, because the Manipur government is too poor, which they promised to our sister two years back was still unfulfilled”.
Pu Vumsuan added: “We would also request the central government to award residential house (flat in Delhi) to Mary Kom, who has scripted historic achievement in women boxing and brought many Gold medals for India”.
