TSE | Lamka, Jul 22: Incessant downpour for the last couple of days here has caused flood in many parts of the town, disturbing normal movement and prompting several families to retreat to safer places even as the district administration has directed the District Disaster Management Respond team to start responding from 6 pm.
A very heavy rainfall in the afternoon today wreaked havoc as many rivulets overflew their courses and submerged several houses located in close proximity to the rivulets.
People in low lying localities were seen wading through the flood water, which at its peak touch their waist, while some narrow bridges were run over by flood water which hamper people's movement.
The impact of the flood was mostly felt along the Lanva rivulet, particularly by those who have encroached upon the river course, as it has submerged several houses and destroyed others. A small bailey bridge built over the rivulet was damaged by the current as well.
The water level of Khuga river also rose to an alarming level, inundating many low lying localities but there was no immediate report of damage along this river so far.
With the torrential rain that hit the area for the last three days showing no signs of ending even by the time of filing this report, the flood situation is likely to worsen.
With many families leaving their homes for safety, philanthropic organisations have begun taking up relief works while the Deputy Commissioner has called on the DDMRT members to response to the flood situations and instructed them to report at Lanva bridge by 6 pm.
The Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur Lunminthang Haokip, SDO of Churachandpur ST Gangte, and ADC TK Simte along with several officials personally assessed the flood situation later in the evening.
