THE RELEVANCE OF GLOCAL VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR GENERATION

Why Glocal Volunteers?

We see in Acts17:26 God allotted the times of our existence. And during this only one lifetime, everyone encounters individually and corporately, challenges and opportunities which are unique in their own generation. The challenges facing our generation are enormous; also great are the opportunities in this age of globalization – to love and serve God and our fellow human beings.

Individually we are called to respond to this in our own unique way; but we are also called to respond collective by joining together.

History has taught us that blessed are the individuals and communities who wisely and obediently respond to the call of their generation! But it is also true, the consequence of failure in this area were always catastrophic.

Glocal Volunteers, therefore, came into being with the realization, conviction and commitment that the challenges and opportunities of our own generation must be individually and collectively responded to. Hence, GV is called to a particular station in life called Generational Responsibility.

The scenario of our time in the context of our people

The Kuki-Zomi conflict results in putting our society and social order upside down. Life pre Kuki-Zomi conflict and post Kuki-Zomi conflict will never be the same again. The post conflict saw thousands of our folks never again entering a structured Church. GV seeks to take our Church and pulpit into the streets, neighborhoods and marketplaces (but we do not intend to replace or substitute the local Churches) in order to reach out to those who no longer come inside the traditionally setup Church.

Social responsibility and issues must be taken up by Christians and it is too precious to be entrusted to few individuals who are far away from God. If we entrust only to those who are far from God we will realize after some years that our people and land will be also very far from God. Jesus showed us by example that we must live with compassion and act justly and caringly. GV embarking upon social responsibility is in obedience to the cry of the prophets of old and the teaching of our Lord.

The scenario of our time in the context of our land

The scenario of our land is like a sheep without a shepherd and a village without its chiefs and fathers. We have vast tract of land left unmanaged and unutilized. We have wonderful and lovely villages without being governed or taken care. The wisdom and love of Jesus Christ must help us to govern properly and fruitfully our lands and it also must constraint us to care the welfare of our villages and villagers. GV seeks to attempt this vast tract of land which are not managed so that our common wealth and community’s heritage and natural resources must be tapped and bring wealth and richness to the common people, who are the true owners and defenders of our land. How can our lands and natural resources must be tapped and managed in such a way that the citizens benefits, not just few individuals is of high priority agenda in GV’s vision.

The spiritual context of our people

So far what we saw prominently are crusades and camps usually centering around salvation for almost a century. We are not against it. But a century old Christianity has much other things and business to talk, do and take care. GV realized that four crucial themes if centering around a Christian/Church, will bring wonders and miracles not only to the individuals but Churches, neighborhoods, land and nation. Therefore, God gave us a spiritual mission and we develop four basic themes centering around our spiritual focus (though not limited to):

  1. 1.Salvation (regeneration)
  2. 2.Discipleship

2.1. Individual Discipleship

2.2. Community (corporate or collective) Discipleship

      3. Transformation

            3.1. Individual Transformation

3.2. Community (corporate or collective) Transformation

      4. Abundant living (fruit bearing life in words and deeds)

At GV, two terms are commonly use. They are - Integrated Welfare and Generational Responsibility

Integrated Welfare: GV emphasis is on integrated welfare. Integrated welfare seeks to address the needs and queries of the body, heart, mind (intellect) and soul thereby something positive and good comes out at the end to the life of the service receivers.

Generational Responsibility: At GV, we believe, there are God-given responsible, in the forms of challenges and opportunities, which individually and collectively we have within generation and time frame.

GV concept of volunteerism to serve our generation

One of the many unique differences of Glocal Volunteers with other non-profit organizations operating in our land is its employment and adaptation of the idea of volunteerism. It seeks to identify, harness, channelize, utilize, manage and develop the Human Resources of its Volunteers to fulfill its objects. It gives volunteer opportunity to everyone who is interested in contributing to its vision and mission. Anyone – young and old, employed and unemployed, dwellers in cities or villages, government officers or lay persons, men or women, Christian leaders or lay persons.

Therefore, Glocal Volunteers create opportunities for services to the district and nation by recruiting students (Volunteers can be everyone – employed, retired, unemployed, skilled and unskilled individuals, college students or school dropouts, young and old) volunteers on their availability basis. Volunteers can be physically present. Even those who are studying or working in Delhi/NCR, Shillong, Guwahati, Mumbai, Tokyo, US, Yangoon, Seoul, etc. can be Volunteers. There are simple and few guidelines for Volunteers. All track records of each Volunteers are kept in the head office.

Many things will be the outcome of this volunteerism. Some of which are:

1.1.The individuals or groups or community, who are the object of volunteerism will immensely benefit the services of the Volunteers.

1.2.Self-actualization or a sense of fulfillment by way of contributing to the welfare of your people and land will give you tremendous inner peace. By having contribution in the minimizing and eradicating the struggles of your people’s pain and hardship you will also have a share in its glorious history of victory and progress. God calls us to identify ourselves in the lives and struggles of our people like He himself identified and participated in the lives of human who were created in His own image and likeness.

1.3.For students/youths/researchers - through their involvement in different areas and issues the Volunteers will acquire many skills and knowledge. Directly and indirectly they will grow in different ways and areas. According to individuals, attendance and performance, recommendations and certificates of contribution (including experiences) are issued to needy volunteers upon request. This will benefit students in their future when they apply for further studies or seek jobs. It will be another badge of honor for those who are already employed. Some of our volunteers had already gone abroad or got placements after our official recommendations.

How it is funded?

GV has in its principle not to take and receive any foreign and Government funding for laying the foundation. Till date it has not receive any financial assistance from abroad and government. It rely purely on indigenous support as it is an indigenous movement. People like you and me are the reason why Glocal Volunteers exist. And that’s why you and me must be the reason why GV is financially sustained too. GV has already crossed more than two years and ten months as one of the few indigenous organization existing in our land and serving our own people. We move and walk by faith, relying solely on God’s provision. If God want us to do ‘more’, He will provide ‘more’. If it is God’s will that we do ‘little’ for our people, He will provide ‘less’. It is up to Him the way we minister and serve!

Vision: To work out generational responsibility.

Mission: To work out generational responsibility through integrated mission by serving the integrated welfare of individuals, communities and nations.

“COME BACK HOME!”

(A letter of conscience to my fellow brothers and sisters in faith and flesh in Delhi and National Capital Region; In short, a letter to a Non-Residential Brethren)

There has never been such an exciting time as this one in the annals of our people – both in the physical and spiritual world. It may not be an overloaded word to say that in every sense and in every arena of life we are at a crossroads in Manipur. Our spiritual-physical life setting is in transitory stages. Therefore it is at a very strategic stage we are in history. And so, it is of paramount nature to rethink as individuals and as a community-nation to see whether we are heading to the right direction in all matters.

If all the good men and women and if all the brightest of our best abandoned our towns and villages, what will be the future of our people and land?  If all our visionaries and rising leaders left their people heartland, what will be our destiny?

Hear the cry of fatherless sons. Hear the cry of motherless daughters. Hear the groaning of a dying land. Hear the bleeding of shepherdless people. Hear the call of your folks. They say, “Come back! Come back! We need you!”

Here is how you can come back:

1. By literally coming back and share in the struggle and suffering and also join in our communities’ moments of joy and harvest.

2. By praying regularly for her welfare – people-land while you physically stays where you are now.

3. By contributing ideas and/or money for her cause – folks-land.

4. By volunteering your gifts/talents/skills even while in Delhi/NCR.

5. By supporting GV in any way possible.

6. By referring GV to others.

7. By joining with us or with other organizations/institutions focusing on our people-land.

8. By volunteering at GV (even one or two days or an hour, if not a month or so) when you come home for holidays.

9. By asking God daily to participate in the life of your people and land.

As I write this invitation, two things come into memory:

First, the opening verse of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. He opened, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.” My heart goes out to the four corners of our habitation and I asked myself, “Is it not also this time?”

And secondly, my minds goes to some strategic years which has turned our world around – 1910 of first missionaries coming in - followed by spiritual-social transformation; 1914-1919 of First World War which saws our land as a battlefield of Axis and Allied forces and thrown opened our world to the outside world and thereby altering our way of life and perception and making our forefathers and foremothers more stronger and capable for any life eventualities; 1917s of which our warriors revolted against outside impositions; the same years saw a remarkable exposure to the outside world of our men who join with the allied team and whereupon new thinking evolve amongst our men; 1930s of the great mass movement and social-cultural transformation in the light of the Goodnews; 1947/1948 of the partitioned of our land into three countries; 1950s of the great mautaam (famine);  1980s of the invasion of drugs and gang culture and our failure to organized ourselves strategically to combat social evils; 1990s of the glorification of gun culture, authoritarianism and the decline of our civilization; 2000s of the rebuilding and restoration process; 2010-2020 of the golden opportunity and challenges which will decide the destiny of our people and land for 500 years (at least till 2500 AD). If we do not let Jesus Christ lead us in this decade (2010-2020), we will drift far away from the Anchor of our life for coming centuries.

It is not out of place to highlight that of the many generations and decades, there are some generations and decades which play key and strategic roles in deciding and determining the course of communities and nations for centuries. And this is such time for us!

Please do not take it to be too blunt if I may say this - you share in the struggles, trials and sufferings of your folks today, you also will surely join in the day when they will sing, dance and harvest. If we do not join hands now, long will be the night of our struggles; but if we join together, far will not be the day when we sing and dance together in the mountains and fields. If we call ourselves brothers and sisters and if we say you are my family, it is our bounded duty and responsibility that we must walk together in the common life and journey together in the path of community of togetherness life.

It is good in the name of God we give our life, years, skills, energy, experiences and gifts to Government, companies, organizations and others. But must we also in the name of God not give a part of ourselves to our people and land – so that God is ultimately lifted up high in our midst?

Let me close with this thought: “I shall have no right,” Bonhoeffer wrote to Niebuhr before leaving America, “to participate in the reconstruction of Christian life in Germany after the war if I do not share the trials of this time with my people."... Bonhoeffer never regretted this decision, not even in prison, where he wrote in later years:

“I am sure of God’s hand and guidance... You must never doubt that I am thankful and glad to go the way which I am being led. My past life is abundantly full of God’s mercy, and, above all sin, stands the forgiving love of the Crucified.” [© ‘Memoir’ by Gerhard Leibholz Bonhoeffer's closest friend and brother-in-law].

The ‘war’ is not over yet. It is still time. Over our sky. the battle of good and evil are intense. We stretch forth our right hand of invitation and brotherhood-sisterhood to join hands today. Let us work and serve together for God and for our people/land - and others!

Your brother in faith and flesh,
