RBI conducts financial Literacy Camp at Sapormeina
Kangpokpi, June 23 2014: Under the aegis of Reserved Bank of India, a Financial Literacy Camp was held at Morning Star English High School, Sapormeina in Sadar Hills, Senapati district today.
The camp was attended by more than 250 students, teachers and bankers from the surrounding areas, RBI officials as well as Lead District Manager, SBI Sapormeina and Thangliensei Kipgen, Manager, SBI Sapormeina Branch.
Speaking on the occasion, Assistant General Manager (Rural Planing & Credit Department), RBI Guwahati, M.T.Muanding Guite explained that the main objective of the camp is to create awareness on financial and banking related matters among the students, who will in turn help in spreading financial literacy to the other people who are in the dark regarding the same.
He pointed out that though India has achieved Independence in 1947, yet 60 per cent of the country's populations still do not have any bank account due of ignorance about banking and its services provided to the people.
The AGM further dwelt on salient features of genuine bank notes and demonstrated how to differentiate genuine bank notes from fakes one.
Lead District Manager, SBI Sapormeina S.Chaudhury observed that it is the duty of every Branch Manager of the bank to conduct and organize Financial Literacy Camp in remote areas once every month so as to impart the various banking education and facilities to the people.
He said that every householder of the country should open a bank account and added that the time will come shortly not to pay any kind of payment without bank account.
Speaking about non-banking financial istitutions, T.Basu, Manager of RBI, advised the students not to be lured by 'fly by night operators'; who offers high rate of interest on deposit while A.Chakraborty, Manager RBI Guwahati briefed the district administration about e-payments and Regional Electronic Clearing System which is under implementation by the Govt. of Manipur.
Thangliensei Kipgen, Branch Manager, SBI Sapormeina Branch lauded the RBI for the initiatives of imparting financial literacy and banking system to the people of the areas and urged the people for their cooperation.
During the programme, a quiz competition was also conducted based on the sessions conducted by the RBI and latest General Knowledge book, 2015 edition were awarded to the winners apart from various gifts presented to Morning Star English High School, Sapormeina, whih hosted the event.
In the meantime, SBI Sapormeina Branch opened and distributed 31 bank accounts for the students during the programme today.
