IMPHAL, May 22: A rare species of cane (Meralepus Paradoxa) which has not been reported found in any part of India has been discovered in Kailam reserved forest in Churachandpur district, claimed Life Sciences Associate Professor in Manipur University P Kumar.
Speaking at the International Biological Diversity Day observance at Manipur Zoological Garden today, P Kumar said that Manipur has become the first State in India to report about the discovery of this rare cane species.
He also observed that there have been many changes in the biological diversity of the State as many indigenous varieties of plants have disappeared paving way for many exotic breeds.
The function organised by the Manipur Biodiversity Board was presided by Chief Conservator of Forest N Kipgen. He said that it is mankind who has been disturbing biodiversity the most.
Additional PCCF DC Kantak called upon all to preserve natural biodiversity of the land. Later, prizes were distributed to winners of a painting competition organised in connection with the International Biological Diver-sity Day for school students.-TSE
