James Keivom wins the NYPPA Pictures of the Year gala.

New York 16 June 2015. Daily News photographer James Keivom took home the top two awards Monday night at the New York Press Photographers Association’s Pictures of the Year gala.

Keivom’s coverage of the protests over the chokehold death of Staten Island dad Eric Garner won him the coveted Best in Show honor. His work in Ferguson, Mo., covering protests around the fatal shooting of teen Michael Brown also helped his overall portfolio earn him Photographer of the Year.

Keivom and colleagues Debbie Egan-Chin and Todd Maisel swept the awards for Spot News — taking all three top slots.

All told, 33 News shutterbugs took home awards.

Keivom, who also won first and second places and an honorable mention in the News Picture category, said he was grateful to be part of The News team.

“It’s a privilege and an honor to be sent to cover such important stories and I thank my editors for that,” he said.
