Vijender loses in semis; settles for bronze
22 Aug 2008, 1318 hrs IST,TOI Sports

NEW DELHI: India's ace pugilist Vijender Kumar lost the semis encounter in the 75 kg middleweight category to Cuban Emilio Correa Bayeaux in Beijing.

In the first round Cuban Emilio Correa Bayeaux gained two points, whereas, Vijender with his solid defence tried to play in the attacking mood. However, the Indian ace could not gain any point and lost the round 0-2

In the second round, Vijender returned with a bang gaining one point. His Cuban opponent was not far behind and again clinched one point. In the hard fought round, Vijender tried his level best but could not level the score.

Vijender adopted attacking strategy in the next round, but his opponent maintained his lead and did not allow him to win the third round as well. The Bhiwani pugilist lost the third round 0-3.

In the fourth round, trailing 0-7, Vijender reaped some benefit of his attacking ploy as he earned two penalty points awarded by the referee. But that was not enough to seal the victory as he eventually lost the game by the margin of 5-8.

He had to settle for the bronze only as the Indian tally at the Beijing Olympics increased to three that include one gold and two bronze.

QUOTE from REUTERS - Thu Aug 21, 7:00 AM ET
Hot date with Bipasha in store for 'golden' Vijender

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu has offered to go on a date with Indian boxer Vijender Kumar if he wins gold at the Beijing Olympics.

Kumar, 23, assured himself of at least a bronze medal when he outpointed Ecuador's Carlos Goncora in the middleweight quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Now, hes two bouts away from Olympic gold and a hot date with one of Bollywoods most glamorous heroines.

I have heard that Vijender told the media that I am his favourite actress, Basu told reporters on Thursday.

Well, let me tell him that if he wins the gold medal for India, I will go on a hot date with him.

Up next for the handsome pugilist from Haryana, a part-time model, is a bout against Cuba's Emilio Correa.

I just want to wish him all the best for his semifinal bout, and I hope he comes home with the gold, Basu said.
